Wanna know about new music out there? Or read background stuff and reviews? Or just listen a bit to get inspired? Here's where I'm usually going to: hypem.com.
They call it a hype machine, and that's pretty much it: a constantly updated long list of music blog links and also with particular mp3 links - you can play the songs immediately in their on-site player. For unregistered users (like me) the count of player clicks is limited; if you find an interesting band/song I suggest to visit the respective blog directly (by clicking 'Read more...'). Then you can read the whole article on the original site where you'll often find videos and further music links.
I love the broad variety of styles on hypem, not only mainstream but also a lot from classic, jazz, tech/electro and experimental. Ok, the next time you're bored, just check it out and get imbued. I'm sure you will like it.
Remix of one of my brother's instrumental compositions (Cubase test: guitar, piano, drums); added some female voices and a tibetan chanting intermezzo.
Slow pop ballad about two friends who lost their dream. Wrote it when I was in a rather sentimental mood. So it turned out quite simple and technically far from perfect (jolty vocals, monotonous backing synth, suboptimal balanced tracks). However, after having listened to the draft mixdown twice, I didn't mind, cos my basic intention was to carry the lyrics. On the other hand - if you're in such a weepy disposition you don't care for details.
Spoken words appearence: Of_The_Ego.
Ethno Triphop. Mixture of modern drum'n'bass and traditional chinese instruments such as erhu, pipa, luan, guzhen and ban-di. They're mostly bowed or plugged strings, having simple yet interesting sounds. In spite of their frugal structure, Asiatic tunes have got a very profound, natural and acoustic flavour when interpreted by such instruments - which are seldom applied in other styles, eg. like triphop or jazz; nonetheless it's always worth a try.
