This song was the first song I put together before I had anything to do with Splicemusic site and this site. Not sure how to classify this song. The song is in it's rough draft mode and I will be working on a new version of it over the summer. I plan on taking out some of the repetitive guitar lead parts and clean up the second guitar rhythm part that is a bit messy. Let me know what you think.

Great potential

I like it. Even in it's rough draft, I think it has a good sound and feel to it. I like the synth part and I think the guitar is a nice counterpart to it. Look forward to hear how it develops.

Looks like it will be winter

Well with some of my personal slow downs, such as my back injury. This song will be revisited over the winter time it looks like, just couldn't get to it over this summer. But I am looking forward to redoing it. Recently I have been having some PC glitches crop up and I will have to be looking into that issue, Ardour won't even load up. The song has had a few downloads and I still like where it is going musically. I will have some time to work up some lyrics maybe too. The problem with adding lyrics to a song that has been out for so long might not be a good thing and since the song was written without lyrics in mind, it might give it a forced feel. If I find lyrics that just seem to magically fit it I will give it a go. I keep talking about singing and lyrics but I have yet to give it a go. I am so out of my comfort zone with singing. Maybe I'll find a singer for this song, that might be a better idea. Maybe the song was meant to be without lyrics what do you guys think? Talking about singing, I was singing along to one of Asaguares songs "Years of Temptation" great song Asa! The embarrassing part about it was that I could not hold Asaguares notes/tone at all but I was dead on with the girls high falsetto sounding voice, oh my, My IGTB didn't kick in hahaha.

Surf it - sing it

Dunno what I did in early May, but somehow missed this one. Has a good tempo and length, very nice flow and I love the combination of these groovy drums, your (slightly tube-overdriven?) guitar riff and this deep synth, serving as bass and ambient pad. Most important, there's still enough space in the mid frequencies where vocals reside, so it would give a proper environment for any kind of voices.
Right now, while typing, I'm singing along with it and find it perfect for warming up - just started my day about 20 minutes ago - and trying out vocal improvisation lines. Although your tune is basically set to key C, it also tends to key F, which allows to drop in some blue notes such as Bb (resulting in a C7 scale) or even a shy Eb (colouring it in a jazzy mood way).
Well, about our vocal range... Used to warm up with some Beatles songs when I was 20 years younger, haha. Today I'm having my problems in reaching their higher notes, which is sad for me, because actually I love high melodies and falsetto, e.g. for backing purposes a la Simon/Garfunkel.
Normally the human voice range keeps lowering down during life, not too bad - I could try to sing in a kinda Tom Waits style more often. Unfortunately it won't work in my case, for I'm only loosing high notes without winning any new bass range, haha.
Necessity is the mother of invention, so today I concentrate in techniques such as breathing, hitting and holding notes correctly, vibrato or clear articulation - rather than jumping through octaves or complex wide interval patterns as I did in former times.

Speaking of... analyzing non-western music, I not only came across interesting unusual rhythms, scales or instrumentations, but also discovered new singing techniques such as undertones and overtones, which opened a sort of exotic field of experiments and new expressions for me.
So here's my attempt of producing under- and overtones: The sample consists of two breaths, each one starting with the undertone (throat chant - 1 octave down) and return to normal voice with different added overtones (prime, 3rd or 5th respectively) depending on formed vowels. In the second breath I tried to switch the undertone to an even lower level which happens to be a 5th under the suboctave.
(Added a small amount of echo. No other post-processing was applied.)

Surf :: vocal idea

Out of curiosity I looked at ccmixter.org for new narva9 acapellas. Well, she had a new one, but sings it in key D with 70 bpm. So I perkily pitched it down to C and raised tempo to 95 bpm. Now it sounds pretty weird (compared to her original), but after all matches nicely your 'Surf' draft.
In case you want to experiment with the track - may be to add a second melody with your own voice - see the following files in my collab folder:
- narva9_TooQuietNight_C95.ogg (sound file)
- narva9_TooQuietNight.txt (lyrics file)

vocal mashup

It does show some good matching qualities for sure. When you listen to it by itself, it almost has a non human characteristic to it, which is actually kinda cool and unique sounding. When I get some time I am going to play with it some to see what I can do.
