Computer - CPU on the way

Necromanos's picture

Hey y'all! I'm still currently without the music computer. The new CPU is on the way though. I hope, hope, hope, that it will fix the problems and get me running again. If it doesn't I will probably be angry enough that I'll just buy a new computer, though it wouldn't really be financially responsible. But at this point I'm about ready to just chuck the Dell and get a PCAL. I miss my soft synths! :o( I've been playing my hardware synth, of course, and have come up with some good melodies and such. I may just have to record something using a combi preset, though I've been trying to get away from preset based songs. Maybe change up the drum patterns or something to make it more unique.

I'm gonna go play now! :o)

CPU on the way, again & Micron rocks!

The replacement Q6600 CPU that I had ordered was out of stock, and it's out of stock everywhere because it's discontinued. So I ordered a Q9400 for a replacement. That CPU should be here Tuesday. It's a little faster than the Q6600 I have in my PC, and Dell said the BIOS supports the Q9400. So hopefully I'll be up and running later this week. Unless the CPU doesn't fix the problems... then I'm buying a PCAL!!

The Micron sounds great. Very analog to my ears! :o) Kind of has a more organic sound vs. my x50. The x50 has "analog" types of sounds of course, but they're really too clean and nice sounding, though sound awesome in themselves. While the Micron is a digitally modeled analog synth, it has a rougher, less polished sound (but really good sound!). You can even program in oscillator drift to emulate analog oscillators not perfectly in tune. I'll try to record something tonight.

Synth On!

CPU didn't work

The new CPU didn't solve anything. I'm buying a PCAL. Dell can go to hell!

Smell hell, Dell

Seems summer 09 is gonna be a challenge for all of us. While you're facing hardware trouble, I'm pretty much out of motivation as to do any composing stuff or even just boot my pc. On the other hand I'm more and more rediscovering traces of simple life, like doing long walks, cooking, gardening or reading a book, I mean like in my pre-computer era.
Right today I thought about that madness of all these political and economic efforts to master the crisis... re-entering the same rat race of profitable growth and destructive exploitation until the next collapse comes. Can't believe accumulating money for the rest of my days, while the best things are for free.

Free

Ah yes, all of those free things are often times more important than the things you must pay for. Unfortunately a new computer is something that will have to be paid for. While I'm glad I at least have the clunker pc to go online, even a single track of audio is a stretch. I can get maybe 30 seconds before audio hiccups. It seems to have slowed down since I last used it, but this pc is 7 or 8 years old. I've just been recording little clips of anything I come up with I like so I don't forget it.

For the not free new pc. I'm trying to decide how unfree I'm willing to go. The PCAL's range from $1000 to $10000. I think I'm going to have to be on the lower end of that unfreeness. I guess I could sort of say it will be free in a way: It will be paid for with a bonus from work my wife is getting that we didn't expect in the first place. She already bought her new laptop, so I'm jealous a bit, lol - but at least I know my budget! So far the PCAL Professional model with an AMD Phenom X4 3.0 Ghz is what I'm hoping for. (I can't decide between AMD and Intel CPU's)

You're talking about free while I chat about spending a lot of money. I'm not really that materialistic, but I'm seriously in withdrawal from recording. The Micron was something to placate myself from going insane with frustration - plus it sounds great!

I hope to hear some new music from you soon! Maybe something simple, just voice and guitar perhaps, if your not into complexities right now.

I'm going to try to record something again. Wish me luck!
