I think I've found the bass I want to get! It's Spector Legend Classic 4. Bubinga finish, rosewood fretboard, black hardware, EMG active pick-ups. The Spectors got the best reviews I've found in the basses in my price range, and I found out a friend of mine has one in a different color, but the same model. He said it played and sounds great, but I'm gonna see if I can play his bass before ordering. No one around here sells them, so I'd have to order it. :o)

The wood finish looks
The wood finish looks beautiful. I will have to start looking around here to see if I can find one of those to try out. If you get one let us know how it feels to play. I am off right now to look on line for some reviews on it.

Bass Update
I ordered the bass! I got a different one than the one I posted about. I got the Spector Legend Custom in black cherry (next step up model) instead of the Classic in bubinga. I emailed Spector with a question about the classic, and when the guy responded he mentionend Sam Ash had the Custom on sale for less than the Classic, so duh, got that one instead! Some of the differences are: set neck instead of bolt on, upgraded pick-ups, and gold hardware. For $30 less than the Classic, and $210 less than Musician's Friend (and everywhere else) was selling the Custom for. Here's a pic of the one I got:
Jamacast Recommendation
This is excellent news on that Bass guitar deal. These are the kind of things people need to know about. When great deals happen like this, it could just be a matter of an individual and his calls and connections making it happen at that store. They might know the stock situation of that particular store from their connections with them. It's almost like having an individual broker find you the best deal on a guitar. So many people get hooked into believing that just because a chain store is overwhelmingly successfull that it has got to be the best deal on whatever they sell. I find this to be just the oposite more times than not. Also these big chain stores raise their prices way up after they have a certain community duped and hooked on their practices.
I think I'm going to start placing a Jamacast recommends image by the businesses that are used by our jamacasters and have had good experiences and relationships with them. Let me know how this goes with this guitar.

Stores
Alot of musicial merchandice is just about the same price regularly at many stores, you just have to check and get lucky with price sometimes. Guitar Center and Musician's Friend are pretty much the same store with MF being primarily online only. I have come across some deals between them though. I bought my Addictive Drums software from MF and a week or so later GC put it on sale for about 30$ off I think. But lucklily MF will match a price 30 days after a sale. But you'd think, being basically the same company they would be aware when something goes on sale at one or the other.
I buy most of my equipment online. One, the local GC never has what I want, and I can order it just as easily as they can. Two, buying online from a store that doesn't have an actual location within my state saves me on sales tax. Most places usually have free shipping as long as your purchase is enough. And when it comes to synthesizers or software, and such, there's shouldn't be any difference buying online vs. going to a store.
Now with the bass, I was planning on going to some stores, and possibly buying locally. I played a few, it seemed all the stores really had were extremely entry level basses, or extremely expensive basses. My budget was $500-$600. I'm glad I came across the Spector. Turned out to be a good bass at the right price. I didn't play one but my friend has one of a similiar model range. So I got him to tell me about it, how it played, sounded, etc. He's been a bass player for 25 years so I felt he's got a pretty good knowledge of what's good and what's crap. So I went ahead and ordered the Spector when I found the sale price. With his opinions paired with the fact I really couldn't find any negative reviews of the Spectors, I think it's gonna turn out to be just the bass I'm looking for. Even better cause I got the step up model!
